If you’re like me, you are tech support for a growing web of friends, family and friends of friends and family.  One problem that comes up from time to time is not having information about the specs in the computer or not having drivers.  To that end there are a couple of utilities that are a must have when supporting random computer.

The newer fake alert malware does a much better job of avoiding detection by virus removal software.  Often even tried and true detection software such as Malwarebytes doesn’t even detect a lot of the infections.  I usually use the following method which 9 times out of 10 removes the virus in 10-20 minutes since I’m used to it.
Here are the symptoms.  The computer has warnings saying files are infected and it may redirect web pages and not allow programs to execute. The following steps should allow you to quickly remove the malware. If the process takes more than 30-40 minutes it may be time to consider backing up data and having the computer reimaged.  Note that these steps require some degree of tech savvy as they don’t drill down exactly how to do each one.  For example, if you don’t know how to get into Safe Mode you’ll have to learn on your own.
1. Reboot the computer into “Safe mode with networking”.

Troubleshooting a blue screen of death is mainly about two things.  Change and failure.  When your computer has a problem it may display a blue screen with white cryptic text.  It could also be set to just reboot in which case all you will notice is that the computer reboots automatically all the time.  The following article describes some steps you can follow to try to discover what’s really wrong so you can fix the problem.

Computer Won’t Start or Boot

One of the most frustrating events that we can encounter with a P.C. is the no post (power on self test)

Here are some tips to troubleshoot that frustrating time.

The first place I always go to is the ram. Usually the cause of all computer startup problems. The first thing to do is to make sure the power is switched of at the wall and the power lead is unplugged. Undo the screws that hold the outer case to the chassis and slide the cover off.

If your computer has more than two ram sticks you can remove one of the sticks quite easily by pushing down the lugs or clips that secure them into place.

Always make sure that the slot that is closest to the C.P.U. is populated (DIMM 1)

Plug the power back in and try to boot the computer. If this doesn’t do the trick, try swapping the ram sticks over.

Most homes in the United States have a computer and a printer. They are becoming an essential part of our lifestyle, much like television and radio have in the past. Printers are a very handy piece of equipment to have around the home; we can print out recipes, information for children’s school projects, text documents and photos.

Printers have come a long way from when they first appeared on the market. Some are even made these days to be more or less disposable; small home printers are often priced at under one hundred dollars so to get them repaired may cost more than just replacing them if they have run out of their usual 12-month warranty.
